What is Speech & Language Therapy?

Speech and language therapy supports every part of communication: understanding what is said, finding the words to reply, putting sentences together, saying sounds clearly, and using language socially with other children and adults.

Some children need help to start communicating at all. Others speak fluently but are hard to understand, or struggle to hold a conversation. We assess where the difficulty actually sits before we plan any therapy, because the right starting point makes all the difference.

Who may benefit

Is this right for my child?

You do not need an official diagnosis to come and talk to us. If any of the following sound familiar, an assessment is worth having.

  • Few or no words by the age your family expected
  • Speech that family members or teachers find hard to understand
  • Difficulty following instructions or answering questions
  • Repeating words or phrases rather than using their own
  • Stammering, or effortful, hesitant speech
  • Difficulty starting conversations, taking turns or staying on topic
  • Feeding, chewing or swallowing concerns

15-Minute Daily Language Expansion Diet

Progress accelerates when clinic skills are reinforced inside daily home routines. Try this 15-minute sequence:

Communication Temptation (4 mins)

Place a favorite snack or toy inside a clear, tightly sealed container. Wait for child to initiate eye contact and word/sound before opening.

The +1 Word Expansion Rule (5 mins)

Repeat whatever word your child says and add one descriptive word (If child says 'car', you say 'fast car' or 'blue car').

Focused Joint Attention Reading (4 mins)

Read an interactive book. Instead of asking 'What is this?', comment and pause for 5 seconds ('Look at that huge red tractor...').

Oral-Motor Mirror Mimicry (2 mins)

Sit in front of mirror together. Make playful mouth shapes: wide smile, fish lips, tongue to top teeth.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

No. Early support is the most effective support. If you are worried, an assessment now is far better than waiting to see.

Research consistently shows the opposite: giving a child a reliable way to communicate reduces frustration and supports speech, it does not replace it.

Yes. For children enrolled at Shining Star School, the therapist and the class teacher share goals so practice continues all day.
